Gutters in Lake Oswego

First Addition and the streets near the lake are a mix of 1920s cottages and rebuilt craftsman-style homes where half-round and copper gutters are expected, not a luxury. Lake Grove, Forest Highlands, Palisades and the Uplands are 1960s–80s homes on big wooded lots — many with cedar shake roofs, steep pitches and 100-foot Douglas firs dropping needles directly into the trough. Mountain Park and Westlake are 1970s–90s homes on hillside lots where downspouts have to be routed carefully because the ground falls away toward a neighbor.

Two things make Lake Oswego gutter work different. The first is cedar shake. Shake roofs shed water fast, usually have no drip edge, and cannot have a guard tucked under them, so the gutter has to be hung tight and the guards fascia-mounted. The second is the hillside. Much of Lake Oswego sits on Portland Hills silt, which turns to soup when saturated, so a downspout that dumps on a slope above a retaining wall is a real problem, not a cosmetic one.
